Welcome to the Rubus blog

A blog for 2012! It's my opportunity to share my thoughts, ideas and musings about life, people, work, business, what's going on now and what the future holds. This is a new experience and who knows, it could be quite therapeutic. So let's muse together.

2012 is a year of celebration, despite perceived economic gloom. The Olympics, the Golden Jubilee, 10 years of Rubus. Already the Team GB Track Cycling Team have staked their credentials for the Olypmics, carrying off a haul of medals at the World Track Cycling Championships a couple of weekends ago. I was hooked by the post event interview with the Team Performance Director, Dave Brailsford, and his comments about the team's success. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cycling/17092274

He said "Personally what I'm really pleased to see is the self-belief of the whole team. The riders, the staff, the whole team has come together again. The belief systems are in place and we're building momentum. You can't perform at the highest level without that foundation." His leadership ability has been proven over the many years he's built and taken teams to titles and medals. The leadership he gives and the beliefs he instills with his people will be lived by every leader in the team. Yes, Dave scrutinises individual performance data - lap times, acceleration - and yes, every individual in the team knows what they're there to do and what's expected of them - but for Dave the X-Factor in their performance, what makes them a Championship winning team, is their Team Belief and Self Belief.

On Twitter recently @LizWatkinsYoung I said that "leading others starts with self: self-belief, self-awareness and self-determination". If you really believe you're good, then you're good. If you really believe you're an Olympic or World Champion (or the equivalent for us non-sporting types) then you will be an Olympic of World Champion. I'm reminded of a supposed QED quote from (I think) Henry Ford - "If you think you can, you can. If you think you can't, you're right." How is the absolute belief of a track cyclist linked to their heart, lungs and muscles? That's the subject of another blog entry, and clearly they are linked. So what's your belief about yourself and your chosen disclipline? And how is that linked to what you achieve, through your heart, lungs and muscles?
